About the Watch
The Silverstone chronograph, which was introduced in 1974, is named after the renowned Silverstone racetrack located between Northampton and Oxford, an hour's drive west of London. Silverstone is renowned as the venue for the British Grand Prix, which it first hosted in 1948, and also holds a special place in TAG Heuer's history. Many of the brand's racing ambassadors and F1 team partners have achieved career-defining victories on this track, starting with Emmanuel de Graffenried in 1949, followed by Juan Manuel Fangio, Jo Siffert, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen, and Lewis Hamilton with Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Benz. The Silverstone chronograph quickly became a style icon of the 1970s due to its unique name, avant-garde appearance, and distinctive shape, which earned admiration from the era's top drivers. TAG Heuer was the official timekeeper for Ferrari during this decade, but it also collaborated with McLaren, BRM, and Surtees-Ford, with drivers from these teams all wearing a TAG Heuer watch. In 1974, the same year the Silverstone was introduced, two legendary drivers, Clay Regazzoni and Emerson Fittipaldi, became TAG Heuer ambassadors and chose the chronograph as their lucky charm. Fittipaldi won his second F1 World Championship in 1974 while driving for McLaren, while Regazzoni won the Silverstone GP in 1979.
About the Brand
Tag Heuer is a venerable watch brand with roots tracing back to 1860 when Edward Heuer established a family business making simple silver pocket watches. Just nine years later, the company revolutionized the pocket watch by obtaining a patent that eliminated the need for a key, making winding much simpler. But that wasn't enough for Edward Heuer. In 1887, he obtained another patent for the oscillating pinion, which allowed chronographs to start and stop instantaneously. These innovations propelled the company to the forefront of watchmaking and firmly established it as a forward-thinking manufacturer. Over the next century, Tag Heuer continued to innovate in both watchmaking and instrument technology. In the midst of this innovation, ownership of the company changed hands for the first time. Interestingly, the company was known as simply Heuer from 1860 to 1885 before being acquired by Techniques d'Avant Garde (TAG). TAG combined its name with Heuer's to create Tag Heuer. In 1999, LVMH Group of France acquired the brand. Despite changes in ownership, Tag Heuer has always focused on innovation and accurate timekeeping, particularly for chronographs. Racing is at the heart of the Tag Heuer brand, and the company has produced both famous race watches and complicated watches such as the Mikrograph.
