Besides sportwatches outfitted with a chronograph, Ebel is particulary known for its line of delicate, feminine watches designed for women. Their jewellery watches were especially influenced by the designs of Alice Blum originating in the early 19th century, and as the 1990s saw the peak of their popularity following a huge growth in market share in the previous 20 years, Ebel launched a wristwatch that can be called nothing short of a masterpiece. The ellipse shape, first introduced by Patek Philippe in their "Golden Ellipse" series that sent the watch world into an uproar, was combined with the tonneau shape which gained popularity in the roaring twentys up to the 1940s and played a big role in the designs of Eugène Blums wife, that both ensircled the perlmutt white dial and were set with 44 diamonds, complementing the 18ct. solid gold in a jewellery piece that modernized two unique as well as pretty rare shapes shortly before the turn of the millennium, creating a truly one of a kind timepiece.
Ebel was established in 1911 by Eugène Blum and his wife Alice, whose maiden name was née Lévy, in La-Chaux-de-Fond. The brand name originates from the first letters of their names: Eugène Blum Et Lévy. According to the company catalogue of 2008, Eugène was responsible for the technical elements and Alice for aesthetics and design. Little is known about her public identity as an artist and entrepreneur, nor about her private life in the family and in the Jewish community. In 1929, their son Charles took over the management of the company. He built the sales network of the business by further expanding it into many foreign countries, including the United States. Under the direction of Blum's grandson Pierre-Alain, the company took a significant upturn since the beginning of the 1970s and produced wristwatches for Cartier, leading to Ebel becoming the fastest growing swiss watch manufacturer in the 1980s and the 1990s. The company was part of LVMH Group until the end of the 2003 till it was sold to the Movado Group for $62.2 million.
